Broiled Grapefruit Prepared Two Ways

Mr. KISS in the Kitchen and I had an opportunity to sneak away for a little babymoon last month and I’ve been dying to recreate one of the things we ate on our trip! And technically, it was a honey/babymoon because we snuck away the day after renewing our vows. It was an incredibly special ceremony that our pastor, Max Lucado, graciously officiated. I normally don’t share super intimate details on here (because that’s not what y’all come here for!), but here’s the link if you’d like to see the ceremony. I fully believe God has done tremendous things in our marriage for His glory and part of that, is sharing the story with others. We are truly proof of God’s grace and that with Him, nothing is impossible!

Okay, back to the recipe :D.

Complete disclosure- I wouldn’t call myself a grapefruit fan. I can take it or I can leave it, but I wouldn’t say it’s a fav. But holy cow, broiled grapefruit.. with a teeny bit of sugar and spices, now THAT’s a different story. Grapefruit goes from basic to bougie with just a couple simple steps.

During our trip, we didn’t stray too far from our room, but when we did it was for food. I ordered “Brûléed Grapefruit” at brunch and was pleasantly surprised when it showed up in a pretty little ramekin. I think part of my apathy towards grapefruit is that although I like the taste, it can be a real pain in the butt to eat! I see people cut them in half, stick their special grapefruit spork in there and enjoy, but I just tend to make a mess. I feel like I end up wearing half the grapefruit or get juice everywhere (I sure hope someone else shares in this sentiment and I’m not the only one that can’t manage to eat a grapefruit, but whatev). So, the ramekin was a real game changer.

I put recipe instructions for broiling both whole grapefruit and chopped grapefruit below. Although the grapefruit I had was “brûléed”, I don’t have one of those fancy tools (remember, this is KISS in the Kitchen where KISS stands for Keep it simple, Shannon), so broiling was the simplest shortcut for achieving nearly the same thing.

This also makes for a great dessert with the simple addition of whipped cream. The warm, sweet and slightly spiced grapefruit pairs amazingly with cold whipped cream!

Y’all stay tuned for a special recipe coming up this Thursday! I’ll be taking the day off for my birthday, but my fantastic intern Amanda will be sharing one of her favorite recipes with y’all!

Broiled Grapefruit Prepared Two Ways

Prep Time10 minutes
Cook Time5 minutes
Total Time15 minutes
Servings: 4

Ingredients

  • 2 large grapefruits
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp light brown or turbinado sugar
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground ginger

Instructions

Ramekin

  • Preheat oven to broil (if your oven gives you a temperature option, choose 500°).
  • While the broiler is preheating, slice grapefruits in half and use a paring or other sharp knife to trim away all the rind/pith (all the thick white stringy stuff). Once most the rind/pith is gone, cut fruit into small bite size pieces.
  • Place grapefruit pieces in 2 medium or 4 small ramekins.
  • Mix together sugar and spices and sprinkle evenly on top of grapefruit.
  • Place in oven, about 3 inches under the broiler, and cook for about 5 minutes. Keep an eye for any bubbling over or charring- you want a golden brown, not a burnt grapefruit.
  • Serve immediately and enjoy!

Whole Grapefruit

  • Preheat oven to broil (if your oven gives you a temperature option, choose 500°).
  • While broiler is preheating, slice grapefruits in half, crosswise.

  1. Love that you did the vow renewal during your pregnancy! Also, I’m totally in your “take it or leave it” camp with grapefruit. Will have to try it broiled or grilled!

    1. Thank you, Kelly! The timing was definitely special- we actually planned it a week before we found out we were pregnant! I had to have the dress I had already bought let out just a bit ?. Hope you enjoy trying the grapefruit this way!

  2. First off, getting your vows renewed while pregnant just melted my heart. Congratulations! Secondly, I am obsessed with grapefruit lately + this delightful recipe looks delicious. Sounds like I am going to have to try this very soon! Sounds amazing 🙂

    1. Awww, thank you, Whitney! And if you’ve been loving grapefruit lately, you’ll definitely enjoy this. Super simple and amazing flavor from the broiling process!

  3. I’ve never been a big grapefruit fan either… although I do like the freshness of the zest. I’m going to have to try it broiled though. This looks like it might just be delicious! 😉

    1. Yes; broiled grapefruit is definitely a game changer! Great idea on using the zest- I don’t normally think to do that!

  4. Mmmm…this looks so good! I’m a fan of grapefruit in any shape or form, but I agree-it can be a pain to eat 🙂 Neither one of my kids likes grapefruit, so this might be a delicious way to get them to try it again. So fun you went on a babymoon!!!

    1. Thanks, EA! Definitely think there could be a chance the kiddos would like this version! And yes- so grateful we got to sneak away for a few days!

  5. I LOVE grapefruit, but never go through the effort of broiling it. This one looks too good not to try out though! 😀
